A successful acting career depends on forging and maintaining relationships with industry professionals. Building a thriving network of performers is especially important, as fellow actors are a vital resource for advice, help and referrals.

New York is brimming with actors and related creative professionals that have joined together to support each other in many ways. Besides answering career-oriented needs, many actors seek each other’s company for social reasons. To this end, NYC has clubs, networks and meetups that bring actors together to have fun, share meals and produce new works.

One of these organizations is the Amateur Comedy Club, a private social organization. Performances are attended by the invited guests of Club members, performers, and members of the production team.

While founded in 1884, not until 35 years later did the Club own its current home, a pair of attached carriage houses on East 36th Street’s Sniffen Court. It was renovated to make a 100-seat theater on the first floor and on the second, a kitchen, workroom, dressing rooms and a Green Room.

In the 1960s productions were performed exclusively in the clubhouse; until then, various large theaters around the city were rented. Since 1884, the Club’s unbroken record of major productions makes the organization one of the oldest continuously performing theater group in America.
